Today we are headed to Salzburg, it is 4 degrees and I have to say it is cold. Get to the train station only to be greeted by several smokers, cough, cough, cough…
From Schliersee we have to go to Munich and then catch the train to Salzburg, two hours later we have arrived. Had lunch at a sports book bar, there patrons were placing bets on dog races that occurred every five minutes. Now time to head out and do some sight seeing. I left my Austria book at our apartment so today we would have to find things by chance. We walked down the main street and in the distance I see a castle. Well guess what, just found place number one. Walking across the river into what seems to be a very cute area filled with shops. Now that I think about it, this is what Santana Row in San Jose should have been. A really great atmosphere. Through the narrow streets that were pedestrian only, we arrive at the castle train. The castle has a look of age on the outside, though we get inside and has been redone in most areas. Understanding that repairs have to be done, but should be done to it original look. Either was a great visit and the views from above looking over Salzburg, wow. The views just went on and on, partly cloudy so we were not able to get clear views in some areas. There was a small marionette museum that we found, not what I expected but it was fun. We did the tour of the castle, led us through the history of the castle and each Arch Bishop that was in charge of the castle in their periods of time. The torture chamber was pretty cool, very cold with all the shackles attached on the wall. The dungeon was 19 feet below and the only access was through the chamber. Well that access appeared to be 3X3 hole, and you can only assume the were either dropped down or lifted down. The chamber was never used as the castle was not a court system, though there were prisoners held here. Walked back down and walked the streets with the shops and cafes. Came upon a cathedral and walked in, the pipe organs were playing , lights held to a dim glow, not many people walking in so it was quiet. Down the middle is rows and rows of pews with kneeling stands on the back of each. If you sat in the back during mass, you would not be able to make the face of the priest, place was massive. Though not as big a Notre Dame in Paris. Down the sides of the cathedral you can walk up and around the center, candles lit in front of art pieces telling different stories. As we walked out, I did the best I could to get a picture with out having to use the flash.
We found Mozart’s birthplace by chance, next thing I know from behind us, at least a 100 tourist on a tour group taking a pictures, flashes going off. What, the paparazzi found me, great!!!! We continued to walk back to the train station, and looked for Mozart’s House/Museum, as we walked in the door, they had just stopped selling tickets. Damn it!!!! Oh well, we did have a chance to see the courtyard, was not much to see as the night time has set in.
Eventually we arrived back at the train station and headed back. We got back to our apartment a little before midnight. That was a long day. Walking up to our resort, the temp read 3 degrees. BURRRRRR.
