Today, we walked around a bit, had a late lunch and decided lets go to Ann Franks House and get it over with. I had to get myself prepared emotionally as I did not want to cry at the memorial. The entire thought in how Hitler captured, caged and assassinated each and every person that he sought to destroy is quite hard for me to understand. And I can get really down and depressed with the history of the holocaust. The line was not bad at all to get in, luckily, as this bitter cold here is quite chilling. I liked the fact that it was self guided, but there was a line so you pretty much go the pace of the line. Again, no photographs were allowed to be taken, with the flow of the line I could see how photographs could really hold it up.
The house is pretty much emptied out, however there is artifacts on the wall and on tables in the middle of some of the rooms. I would like to have seen the rooms as they were so you could really get a sense of how crammed the really were. You can get a visual and try to sense how crammed. To be kept in these quarters in hiding for so long, it is a wonder they did not go crazy. To listen on the radio that the Americans have stormed the beaches and have to sit and wait to how close the end of the war and having to hide would end. Not soon enough, as nobody knows how the Nazi’s found them, who told on them. The end did not come soon enough as all eight in hiding and the two workers downstairs who had aided them to hide went to prison. Eventually both families would all be separated to different concentration camps. Both Ann and Margo we able to be paired together.
Moving on through the tour, you wonder how hard it must have been to keep as quiet as possible so that nobody heard you. The floors were wooden, and I am sure back then the wood must have creaked. At the end is a book of all the Jews that had been persecuted in the camps, highlighted is the Frank family.
Lets not forget the other groups of people that were also persecuted. Lets not let those down play the holocaust and state such statements that it never existed. Such hatred in the world today, and yet we should sit back and realize, this is it people. You only get one chance in life, do it right and have the time of your life. Cheers.
Because we are such nice folks, a lady asked us to take a picture of her. So Alx kindly took her camera to take her picture. Well, some how he dropped ours. This is our little digital camera, thank goodness. I would have died if it was our newer one. If I am not mistaken I believe we still have insurance so we can get it fixed. Crossing our fingers.
